Five Ways is Junction 5 of the Birmingham Middle Ring.
Located on the Edgbaston side of Birmingham city centre, this major junction is known locally as Five Ways Island.
History
The original Five Ways junction was a much smaller roundabout in the middle of a dense urban area. It was grade separated in the early 1970s.
Early plans for the junction show the underpass favouring the Middle Ring but it was built along the A456 instead. An article in the local newspaper from October 1972 mentions an intention to upgrade the junction to three levels suggesting an underpass or flyover for the Middle Ring was planned.
