Dartmouth Circus is a junction connecting the A38(M) Aston Expressway to the A4540 Middle Ring Road in Birmingham. It is numbered Junction 13 of the Middle Ring.
History
As with many junctions in Birmingham, the present junction was built in the middle of a dense industrial area. The White Hart pub stood in the middle of where the roundabout now is, which was where several roads converged.
The junction was intended to be on three levels with a flyover carrying the A4540 over the junction. The flyover was never built and correspondence from the late 1960s shows the roundabout would be overloaded within a few years of opening and building it later would involve additional cost and disruption.
The roundabout did indeed become overloaded and is now controlled by traffic lights.
