Loughrea is a town in County Galway. Located some 30 km east-south-east of Galway itself, Loughrea is increasingly becoming a dormitory town for the city, its population (which numbered 5,057 in 2011) having been growing at a rate of around 3% each year since the start of the century.

The main Dublin to Galway road (N6) once passed through the town. Today, however, the M6 motorway passes 8 km north of Loughrea. to which it is connected by the final north-western stretch of the N65, being a new-build section which largely follows the alignment of the former Loughrea branch railway line (closed in 1975).
