Swinford is a small market town (the urban population in 2016 was 1,394) situated in east County Mayo. It is served by two national primary routes, the N5 Longford to Westport road, and the N26 from Swinford to Ballina. On the former, a 5-km long single-carriageway bypass of the town was completed in 1993, following which the latter road (previously numbered N57) was upgraded to primary status.
