The M28 is a short planned motorway upgrade for the N28 southeast of Cork city. Its main purpose is to serve the ferry terminal at Ringaskiddy.
Route
The M28 is planned to start at the Cork South Ring Road at a trumpet interchange. It will initially travel along the route of the former N28 on-line, and then will diverge to an off-line section. Eventually, the motorway regulations are planned to end, with the final stretch to the ferry terminal being a protected road.
The purpose of the road is to serve the large number of multinational pharmaceutical companies around here, plus ending at the ferry terminal, where ferries depart for Roscoff and Santander.
Consultation took place about the preferred route in 2016 and the go-ahead was given in July 2018[1]. Campaigners against the road took their objections to the High Court, but this was ruled against in December 2019[2].
