County Mayo is situated in the northwest of the province of Connacht and the West Region of the Republic of Ireland. Although it is the third largest Irish county by area, it ranks only 17th in terms of population, Mayo having been particularly hard hit by the Great Famine of 1845-49 – and the population of the county today is still only a third of what it was in 1841.

Public highways in the county – other than national roads, which are the responsibility of Transport Infrastructure Ireland – are managed by Mayo County Council.
