The A353 is mainly used as part of a cross-country link between Weymouth and Poole, and is particularly useful when the A35 gets jammed up with holiday traffic in the summer.
It originally started in the centre of Weymouth, before following the current B3155 along the coast to Preston. However, with the construction of the Weymouth Relief Road, the western end of the A353 was moved to meet it at Broadwey, to form a Weymouth northern bypass.
East of Preston, the A353 continues along its original route and heads up towards the A352, which it meets at a roundabout just south of Warmwell.
