The A555 was the original number of the road connecting Ellesmere Port to the A51 at Backford. By 1929, it had been extended to meet the A51 and A5032 at Little Sutton.
In 1935, the entire route was renumbered as an extension of the A5032, allowing the number A555 to be used elsewhere.
