The A568 was part of the direct route from Widnes to St Helens in south Lancashire.
The original route started at the northern end of the Runcorn - Widnes Transporter Bridge (then a private bridge owned by the Widnes Corporation and hence unclassified). It continued into the centre of Widnes, running northwards to Marshall's Cross where it ended on the A570 (now the A569), which road continued into St Helens.
Following the construction of the A557 Widnes bypass, the A568 was downgraded to become the B5419.
