The C505 is a short route in the village of Penshaw, just outside the urban area of Sunderland. It begins on the A183 at the eastern end of the village, heading north into the oldest part of the village with the nearby Penshaw Monument clearly visible on its hill. Past the village green the road swings around to the left, with buildings on the left-hand side and open fields on the right. It continues onto Langdale Road, entering a more modern, residential part of the village, then has to give way to Coxgreen Road. The route turns left here before terminating shortly afterwards, at a T-junction on the unclassified Wensleydale Avenue. The C503 is a short distance to the right, but the roads don't meet.
