The C511 is a major urban radial route in Sunderland, running from the edge of the city centre to the western outskirts and known for most of its length as Hylton Road. It begins at a roundabout on the A1231, heading immediately west flanked by shops. After crossing the Tyne & Wear Metro line adjacent to Millfield station, the road continues past more shops and residential properties before skirting the northern edge of Sunderland Hospital.
The road crosses the C512 at traffic lights and then passes the north side of the extensive Bishopwearmouth Cemetery before the B1405 is met at a roundabout. After this it traverses the residential areas of Ford Estate and Pennywell, with uniform red-brick semi-detached houses on both sides of the road. The street numbers here tell their own story - almost reaching 700 - before the residential area ends abruptly and the road curves to the south through Pennywell Industrial Estate. Emerging from the industrial estate, the C511 then ends at a roundabout on the A183, which has run parallel to it for its entire length.
