Junctions related to the A949

The A9 passes a couple of miles to the west of the former county town of Dornoch, and is connected to the town by the A949. The two meet at Dornoch Junction also known as Evelix Junction which is sited in the tiny village of Evelix. It is a simple T junction set on a sweeping bend on the A9. There is a long right turning lane in the centre of the A9, but this is the only extra provision for turning traffic, with traffic passing between Dornoch and the A9 to the north more likely to use the B9168.

Dornoch has long been a tourist resort in addition to a historic county town, and so it is firmly on the tourist trail up the coast towards Caithness. As such, this junction can be quite busy in the summer months, but the traffic levels are generally low enough for the junction to cope without any serious hold ups. Prior to the re-routing of the A9 across the Dornoch Firth Bridge to the south, the road into Dornoch here was the B9167. The road was reclassified and the A949 number also used for the former line of the A9 along the north shore of the Dornoch Firth.

Immediately to the south of the junction, the A9 crosses the River Evelix at Evelix Bridge, with the old bridge remaining alongside the new one.
