The Airthrey Roundabout is a relatively recent addition to the A9 north of Stirling, built to improve access to the growing campus of Stirling University to the north east of the junction. The A9 at this point was dualled, prior to the construction of the M9 Stirling bypass, and remains so which gives two lanes on the approaches to the junction. However, these additional turning lanes are short lived with the rest of the dual carriageway reduced to D1 to accommodate cycle lanes and turning lanes for other nearby junctions. The approach from the university has also been split into left and right turning lanes, presumably to accommodate large egresses when lectures finish!
