The Mound Junction lies in the historic county of Sutherland just north of Telfords causeway across Loch Fleet at The Mound. It is the eastern end of the A839, where it terminates on the A9 at a simple give way T junction. However, this junction is relatively new, dating only from when the new bridge was built at the north end of The Mound, providing a better route for the A9.
The original line of the A9, as built by Thomas Telford as part of his commission on Highland roads and bridges turned sharp left at the north end of Telford's old bridge, and ran along the shore before turning to cross the railway. Almost immediately to the north of the railway was the terminal junction of the A839, and then the A9 curved around to head east, running slightly to the north of the current A839 line as it turned away to meet the current line of the A9 north of the modern junction. The old road lines now appear to be private property accesses.
