The Raigmore Interchange is the western terminus of the A96 on the A9 to the east of Inverness. It is grade separated roundabout interchange, with the dualled A96 and B865 meeting at a roundabout underneath the A9. The entry to the roundabout from the southbound carriageway of the A9 is signal controlled at peak times. This junction is also noteworthy of being the only roundabout interchange (as opposed to flat roundabout) on the entire Dunblane to Scrabster section of the route. The junction can get very busy, as it is one of the main routes between the city and the A9, even if traffic is signed via the A82, and also sees a lot of traffic taking the A96 either to the retail park or longer distance.
In 2013, as part of construction of the Inverness Campus site to the east of the A9, a new overbridge for non-motorised users (NMUs), known as the Golden Bridge, was built across the southern end of the junction, connecting the campus to the Raigmore Estate.
In 2022 a new route for NMUs, the Raigmore Active Travel Link, opened, which provides a connection between the Golden Bridge and and the NMU routes on Millburn Road (B865).
Future
It is possible that in the future this junction will see some changes, as a proposed new road between Inshes Junction and Smithton Roundabout on the A96, with a connection to Inverness Retail Park, will reduce some local movements between the A9 and A96 at Raigmore. As part of this scheme it is proposed that an auxiliary lane will be added on the southbound carriageway of the A9 between the entry slip road from this junction and the exit for Inshes Junction, mirroring that on the northbound carriageway.
As part of a future upgrade to grade-separate Longman Roundabout it is proposed that auxiliary lanes will be added to both carriageways of the A9 between the slip roads of these junctions.
It is also proposed that all entries to the roundabout will become signal controlled to improve traffic flow at peak times and safety for non-motorised users.
