Approaching Swinfen Junction on the northbound A5148
The A5148 is the number now allocated to the section of the Lichfield Eastern Bypass running from the Swinfen Interchange east of Lichfield to the M6 Toll and A5 at Wall. Originally this was part of the A38, but that road was diverted eastwards along the former A446 some years after construction. Consequently, if you travel southwards from Derby and Burton-upon-Trent and forget to TOTSO at the junction with the A38, you'll find yourself on this road by accident.
A grade-separated junction with the westbound A5 was planned – and remained future-proofed for some years – but when junction T5 of the M6 Toll was built, a simple dumbbell arrangement was put in instead. The exit for junction T5, an eastbound offslip, now feeds directly onto the A5148, whilst the onslip is a short distance to the south on the A5127.
