Gateshead is a Primary Destination in the north east of England. The most striking roads feature is the Gateshead Viaduct constructed in the 1960s to divert the then A1 away from the town centre. It was intended to form part of a much grander through route allowing the A1 to flow uninterrupted through Gateshead and Newcastle Upon Tyne. The route south of the viaduct through Low Fell was fixed by 1968 but faced strong local opposition and was subsequently abandoned. To the north it was known as the Central Motorway East Bypass and this was also abandoned although stubs exist when the Central Motorway was built.
