The A6081 was an important link road, as it was the main route from Gateshead to Hexham (via the A695) that avoided crossing the Tyne.
The road started on the A692 (now B1426) Bensham Road to the west of Gateshead town centre. It headed west along Derwentwater Road to cross the River Team before continuing on through Dunston. It ran along Market Lane to the north of Whickham to cross the River Derwent before reaching Blaydon, where it ended on the A695 near the station.
The arrival of the A1 Newcastle Western Bypass and the Metro Centre has changed the area out of all recognition, and the A6081 is now partly the B6317 and partly unclassified. The eastern end has been severed by the A184.
