The A1114 is a modern road in north Durham, largely serving light industry.
The road starts in the Gateshead suburb of Teams at a diamond GSJ on the A184. Initially the two roads run parallel, with the A184 carrying through traffic and the A1114 serving an industrial estate. The two roads then split, with the northbound offslip from the A184 found at this point, before the A1114 goes over the River Team to reach a roundabout on the edge of the residential part of Teams. We turn right and initially bypass the suburb before having to run through a residential area to avoid dropping into the River Tyne.
Teams is left behind and we run between the river and an industrial estate before moving away from the river to meet the Tyne Valley Line. We pass a warehouse on the right to reach a set of traffic lights. A minor road turns left to serve nowhere in particular, eventually reaching the Metro Centre. Meanwhile on the A1114 a bus lane bears off to the left to serve the centre's bus station. The next roundabout provides access to the bus station and coach park, after which we pass an industrial estate and go over the railway line.
At the next roundabout the Metro Centre car park is signposted for the first time along the route of the A1114. We turn in the opposite direction, however, and continue west, now as D2. We pass a retail park, accessible from that roundabout, before crossing the River Derwent and ending two roundabouts further on on the A694.
