The B440 is the downgraded non-primary section of the A4146, between Hemel Hempstead and Leighton Buzzard, created in 2017 as part of a wider renumbering related to the A5 Dunstable bypass.
It starts at a roundabout with the A4146 and A4147 in Hemel Hempstead, and travels north alongside the River Gade crossing it a couple of times before the valley peters out. Presently the road reaches Dagnall, where the B4506 for Whipsnade Zoo crosses at a roundabout, then a short distance further on we reach a double roundabout where we cross the B489; that road has priority.
After a couple more villages we cross the River Ouzel and then climb into the hilltop village of Billington. There's a view over Leighton Buzzard as we descend and we soon reach the Leighton Buzzard's southern bypass, with an unclassified road running ahead into town, the A4146 resuming to the left, and the A505 heading off to the right.
