The C98 starts on the A6105 to the west of Duns and heads northwest on Gifford Road. This climbs steadily up, passing near the summit of Hardens Hill, before dropping down to cross Kippetlaw Burn. Just over the next hill, and the route passes through Longformacus, after which it continues north west along Gifford Road, climbing again to pass below the summits of Wrunk Law and Wether Law, before dipping down below Duddy Bank to reach the council boundary. The road continues to the B6355, which leads to Gifford.
