Route outline (key)
B6423 Link in Worksop

The B6423 was a short link in the centre of Worksop which ran parallel with and to the north of A57.

Route

From the crossroads where the A60 met the A57 it headed east along Newcastle Street and Memorial Avenue, before turning south down Priorswell Road to terminate on the A57 again. Newcastle Street is now part of the B6024 whilst the remainder is now unclassified.

Numbering

Curiously, although it may be a result of scanning the maps into the computer, the available online mapping suggests that this route was regularly labelled as the B6425 at 1:10560 / 10000 scales. However, the 1:2500 map shows B6423 and on balance this seems more probable, with no other known use whilst the B6425 number was being used elsewhere at the same time.

History

The now-unclassified former B6423 Memorial Avenue

King George V opened Memorial Avenue on 9 July 1928 in a novel way with his car breaking the ribbon across the roadway. At least the King would not have had to find some cash to pass to the giver of the scissors, as was the custom.

Together with Newcastle Street and Priorwell Road, the new B6423 gave a bypass of Bridge Street and Potter Street for west – east traffic. Memorial Avenue was the final instalment of the threefold war memorial which included the monument (unveiled over two years previously) and a new wing to Victoria Hospital.
