Salford is a city in its own right adjacent to its more well known neighbour, Manchester.
Salford is actually the elder of the two cities, having been constructed on the banks of the River Irwell and being granted a royal charter in 1230. Industrialisation saw the smaller village of Manchester expand to become the hub of the urban area.
Salford's central district was historically along the A6, but the redevelopment of Pendleton in the late 1960s created the notorious Salford Shopping City which behaves more like a central business district than the former Crescent and Chapel Street areas do.
