Gorbals Cross is a historic crossroads in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, a little to the south of the Clyde. Today the A8 passes through east-west on Ballater Street and Norfolk Street as an S4 with two lanes in either direction. The A730 approaches from the south as a one-way street with contraflow bus lane, and Gorbals Street to the north continues in the same format to cross Victoria Bridge. This is also part of the A8, with southbound traffic using Albert Bridge a short distance to the east. This whole are has been redeveloped in recent years and the junction is now surrounded by large commercial buildings and blocks of flats, replacing the old riverside warehouses and tenements of the past.
Gorbals Cross was the original start point of the A77. However, when the junction at Eglinton Toll was rebuilt in c1968, the A77 had to be diverted further west, swapping numbers with the A727. However, to date there is no mapping evidence to prove that the A727 reached Gorbals Cross, and it is possible that the A728 or A730 was extended in its place. For many years the eastern arm of the current A8, along Ballater Street was part of the A737.
