Queen's Cross is a historic junction in Maryhill to the north west of Glasgow city centre. As is common across the city, the junction is completely unsigned and you would be forgiven for not knowing you were on an A road. It is also a little confusing, with the current layout of the junction giving the appearance of a TOTSO, where the A81 has to give way (at traffic lights) to the unclassified arm of Maryhill Road, which was formerly the B811.
The A81 has followed Garscube Road north west from the city centre, while Maryhill Road has come in a similar direction from the A82 at St Georges Cross. Queens Cross is more a fork than a cross, where the two routes meet and continue north west as Maryhill Road. The junction is controlled by traffic lights, and the main line appears to follow Maryhill Road, with Garscube Road turning to meet Maryhill Road at a T Junction in what is a spacious triangular 'square'. However, the only way of turning into Garscube Road is from the A81 part of Maryhill Road, and indeed traffic on Garscube Road cannot turn left into the unclassified part of Maryhill Road, these movements (which are effectively a U turn) being catered for by Hinshaw Street a little to the left.
The city-bound route of the A81, then, is along a 'slip road' along the northern edge of the cross, with the two side streets which once turned off to the north now closed up. There is clearly no need for signals on this route, which remains free-flowing, the signals only controlling the exit from Garscube Road onto Maryhill Road.
