Eglinton Toll

Eglinton Toll was once a busy crossroads, set at an acute angle in the Govanhill area of South Glasgow. However, in the late 1960s the junction was closed up and converted into two parallel S2 routes, with only a pavement separating them. This means that it is no longer possible to drive the full length of Pollokshaws Road without making a detour in this area, and the closest connections in either direction are one-way. The only classified route to pass through the former junction is the A77, which approaches from the north on Eglinton Street, gains a short-lived southbound bus lane and continues south on Pollokshaws Road.

The junction is still shown as open on the OS 1:10,000 sheets from 1967/8, but closed on the 1968 OS One Inch Map, presumably dating the changes to 1968. At this point, the A77 was diverted onto its current line, having previously headed south out of Glasgow on Pollokshaws Road, and crossed the A727 at Eglinton Toll. It seems likely that the northern ends of the two routes were swapped, with the A727 moving onto the northern part of Pollokshaws Road, although no mapping evidence has yet been found which shows numbers that close to the city centre. The A727 did, however remain in place further south after 1974.
