For the junction that, up to June 2011, was numbered junction 1, see Fullarton Road Interchange.
For the original junction 1, see Canderwater Interchange.
Kingston Junction is junction 1 of the M74, connecting it to the M8, as well as surface streets below the main interchange. Numerically it is the first junction on the M74, however J21 on the M8, which provides the other half of the surface street connection, is only connected to the outer carriageways of the M8, which is effectively now the mainline of the M74, providing an unusual anomaly. Legally speaking, it is unlikely that the M8s outer carriageways have been redesignated as part of the M74, but the eastern offslip at J21 is now numbered as part of J1 on the M74, while the corresponding onslip remains as part of J21 on the M8.
The M74 completion project opened in 2011, finally connecting the M74 to the M8 and providing a southern bypass to Glasgows city centre, even if the motorway box is not as tight as originally planned in the 1960s. Two new slip roads were built connecting the new motorway to the surface streets below, the westbound offslip meeting Carnoustie Street at traffic lights, while the eastbound onslip diverges from Dalintober Street. These sliproads were designed in such a way that traffic only has to turn left to move between the M74 and the M8 across the Clyde on Kingston Bridge (and vice-versa), movements not directly provided by sliproads. The onslip for M8 J21 is also found in this area, turning off Carnoustie Street at its junction with Dalintober Street. However, the corresponding onslip, which is now signed as part of M74 J1 is some distance away, meeting the A8, Paisley Road at a signalised crossroads to the north west of the M8.
