Dumbreck Interchange is junction 1 of the M77. It was completely rebuilt when the M77 was extended to the south west, and now comprises normal diamond pattern sliproads for the north east bound carriageway, while the south west bound onslip is tightly curled inside the corresponding offslip to avoid the golf course in the normal location for the sliproad. Two sets of traffic lights control traffic flows on the sliproads, and with the junctions to either side also signalised, this gives four sets of lights in quick succession on the B768.

History

When the M77 first opened in 1981, this was the terminus of the new motorway, despite being little more than a mile from its start. The junction was therefore originally laid out as an oval shaped roundabout, with the motorway simply terminating in a similar manner to several other Scottish motorways (such as the M9 and M90. It took fifteen years for the M77 to be extended further south west, at which point the junction was rebuilt in its current form. This included widening the B768 railway bridge to the north, and extending the dual carriageway section which had previously been little more than 100m to the east of the roundabout. It is difficult to be certain, with the maps available, but it appears that the M77 was also realigned, curving slightly to the north, and therefore the current looped onslip is roughly on the site of the old roundabout.
