Invernettie Roundabout lies at the southern edge of Peterhead in the north eastern corner of Aberdeenshire. It is a 5-arm roundabout where the A90 turns west onto the town's bypass, while the A982 continues ahead into the town centre. The bypass opened in 1984, at the same time as the roundabout, at which time it was the A952 which followed the bypass, the route not being renumbered as the A90 until 1994. Each arm of the roundabout is simply marked for a single lane of traffic, although some of the approaches are wide enough for two cars to sit side by side, this is a rare occurence. Since the roundabout was built, the town has grown out to reach the bypass, with the services and retail park (a B&Q store) developing in recent years.
History
Prior to the construction of the bypass, the A952 had passed further east on its way into the town centre. A section of the old alignment can be found in the small industrial area in the south east corner of the junction, lining up with South Road to the north which is the original A952 route. South Base Road which now heads east from the roundabout is also a new road, although it may have predated the bypass. Despite this, there was a junction on the A952 immediately to the east of the current roundabout, where the minor road from Wellbank came in. The section of the bypass from the roundabout to the Upperton Industrial Estate is roughly built on the old alignment of this road.
