Dunnotter Intersection is the southern junction for Stonehaven on the A90, which then multiplexes north with the A92 around the Stonehaven Bypass. It is a Trumpet Junction, with the A90 curving from the south west to the north west and the A92 approaching from the north east. The curved sliproads are in the north west corner, before passing under the mainline of the bypass. A minor road also turns off this sliproad to head west, between the bridge and the split. On the east side of the junction, the A92 is briefly dualled past the junction with the A957, which follows the old route into Stonehaven.
History
Before the bypass was built, there wasn't an important junction here, still less one with three different A roads. The A94, later renumbered as the A90, approached from the south west roughly along the line of the modern dual carriageway. It then used the current southbound onslip, crossed the modern A92 line and ran along a short section of the loop road that serves Dunottar Church, before dropping down into Stonehaven on what is now the A957. The A92 stayed much closer to the coast, meeting the A94 in the town, and were only connected by minor roads near the modern junction. At the time the bypass (both parts) and this junction was opened in 1984, the A94 (as was) to the south remained single carriageway, being upgraded in 1989. The road through the junction had, however, been built as a dual carriageway from the beginning.
