Echline Junction lies on the A9000 (formerly the A90) just south of the Forth Road Bridge. A roundabout above the main carriageway of the A9000 provides access to the B800 (formerly A8000) to Kirkliston, and the A904 which heads westwards along the coast to Bo'ness and Grangemouth. There are local services on either side: on the A904 a petrol station, drive-through restaurant, and motel; the B800 provides access to 2 more petrol stations, a supermarket, fast food, and a hotel.
When the Queensferry Crossing opened, the main traffic route became the new M90, which runs further west, meeting the A904 at the new Queensferry Junction. However, the Echline Junction has remained in place to provide access to the old bridge for vehicles still eligible to use it, and indeed for those rare instances when the new bridge needs to be closed, and the old bridge is put back in to full, temporary use. The junction therefore remains nominally full access, although the sliproads on and off the A9000 are normally only accessible to buses, taxis, vehicles prohibited to use a motorway, and a few other classes of vehicle.
History
Before the Forth Road Bridge opened, the A904 ran into South Queensferry, providing access to the ferry terminal. This junction was built in the 1960s in open farmland along with the surrounding roads, and the town of Queensferry has grown out to meet it.
Just north of the junction on the northbound side, on both the slip road and the mainline, there is parking for abnormal loads waiting to cross the bridge, as well as traffic lights which can be used to block traffic while abnormal loads cross, although it is not clear if these are still used. The toll plaza was formerly situated there, before the toll was abolished.
