Petterden Junction is an at-grade staggered crossroads where the A928 meets the dualled A90. A short distance to the south, a minor road following the former line of the main road turns off to serve the small settlements of Petterden, Todhills and Newbigging, although only the first is signed. Both parts of the junction are full access, using gaps in the central reservation for right turning traffic, the stagger preventing any conflicts with turning traffic.
History
The junction used to be a simple T junction, between the A928 and the A929, the latter following the road through Petterden and Todhills before the new dual carriageway was built and renumbered as the A90. The old location can still be seen on aerial views, lying approximately halfway between the two arms of the current junction. The A928 has, therefore, been slightly twisted to meet the A90 further north than before, with the line of the old road crossing the dual carriageway and meeting the old line of the A929 a little to the north of the current access to Petterden. Although the old A929 section is now gated off, the junction can still be seen a short distance beyond the gate, complete with a left turn deceleration lane, but apparently no provision for right turning traffic.
