Balmedie Junction is on the new dual carriageway section of the A90 running north from Blackdog to Ellon. Although built at the same time as the main Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route part of the Aberdeen Bypass, it was a separate project designed to fill the missing gaps and remove the remaining at-grade junctions to the north of Aberdeen. What had therefore previously been an at-grade T junction between the dualled A90 and an unclassified road into Balmedie became a full dumbbell junction, with a new underpass installed under the A90 connecting the two roundabouts. The sliproads are folded in the north west and south east corners, while the B977 has been re-routed across fields to approach from the west. In addition, a service road heads south on the west side of the A90, roughly on the original A90 line, to serve a handful of properties.
From the east roundabout, The B977 turns north (this is not entirely certain, with conflicting records and mapping evidence) to follow the old A92, Old Aberdeen Road, through Balmedie, while Eigie Road head east through the housing estates. Originally, of course, Old Aberdeen Road was the A92, before the Balmedie Bypass was first built, and as such there was no junction where Balmedie Junction now sits.
