|Junctions related to the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route|
Stonehaven Junction is a grade separated junction at the southern end of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. The junction was originally constructed as part of the Stonehaven bypass, providing an exit from and entrance to the northbound A90 carriageway only. Southbound access into Stonehaven was achieved via the use of the old road, to the east, while there was no southbound entrance at this point - it was unlikely that original traffic patterns would have required more.
With the construction of the AWPR, the new dual carriageway was plugged into the junction. A roundabout was added where the existing northbound sliproads met the B979, while a new southbound entrance and exit were added to the existing A90 carriageway - which, north of this point was renumbered as A92.
This new layout makes as use of as much of the existing infrastructure at the junction as possible, and therefore saved on construction costs - however, the layout requires north and southbound flows for the A90 to cross one another at the newly constructed roundabout. It also brings local and strategic traffic into conflict - it is unlikely therefore to win awards for good junction design practise!
