Toll of Birness is a fork junction between the A90 and the A952 in Aberdeenshire. It marks the point where the main route splits between the A952 which continues north, ultimately reaching Fraserburgh, and the A90 which turns eastwards to Peterhead, before doubling back to meet the A952 again at Cortes junction. Priority is given to the A90 through the junction (unlike at Cortes), with a long slip lane for left turning traffic onto the A952, and all other movements provided by a pair of tightly curved sliproads in the apex of the junction.
Historically, the direct route north from Aberdeen to Fraserburgh was the A92, with the A952 (originally the A949) providing the link to Peterhead. This was all changed in 1994 when the A90 was extended north from Perth through Dundee and on to Fraserburgh via Peterhead, reflecting the trunk route. The direct route, now the A952, was previously a primary route, but no longer is.
