A1/Peterborough - Newcastle
Route in Detail
Jct 17 to 34 - Generally upgraded between 1957 and 1962 to dual carriageway, linking to earlier upgrades around Colsterworth and Elkesley and to the A1(M) near Blyth in 1961. Later improvements in c2008 have improved the remaining roundabouts along the A1 to grade separated junctions.
Jct 34 to 38 - Conceived as a dual carriageway bypass for Doncaster, the development of the first motorway past Preston, left engineers with no doubts that the Doncaster Bypass needed to be Yorkshire's first motorway.
Jct 38 to 40 - Perhaps the next significant section of the A1 that could be upgraded, the poor quality link between Doncaster and the M62 forms a weak link in the key infrastructure of the country.
Jct 40 to 49 - A construction site through most of the 2000s, the A1 through Yorkshire has progressively upgraded to full motorway standard, linking the sections constructed in the 1990s making the route to the north east significantly more reliable than it was.
Jct 49 to 56 - Underwent major upgrades to full motorway standard in the 2010s, the last significant length of dual carriageway standard A1 in Yorkshire is now all but a memory
