For the original, a road between Birmingham and Stafford that is now part of the A34, see A455 (Birmingham - Stafford).
The A455 in Newport was originally applied to George Street Bridge on opening in 1964 and the approach roads on either side (George Street and Wharf Road). This route linked the A48 on either bank of the river, forming an alternative route to following the A48 across Newport Bridge.
Shortly after opening, the A48 was diverted over George Street Bridge, and the A455 was rerouted to start at the Wharf Road end of the bridge, heading south along Corporation Road towards Spytty Road. It took over part of the B4327 classification of Corporation Road and then the entirety of the B4004 Ringland Way, Spytty Road running to the M4 J24. The road thus bypassed the eastern suburbs but either had to return to the A48 past the city centre or cross the Transporter Bridge to continue westwards.
On the completion of the city's Southern Distributor Road in 2004 the A48 was routed along the Ringland Way and Spytty Road sections, with Corporation Road becoming unclassified.
