The B1460 follows the original route of the A171 into Whitby from the west. The road had gained its present number by the mid-1970s.
The road starts at a roundabout on the A171 on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It zigzags north then east to pass Sneaton Castle, now part of an Anglican convent, and reach the edge of Whitby. The B1416 comes in from the right and we take its northerly alignment for a short distance before bearing eastwards once again at the end of the multiplex. After descending Spring Vale there's a brief climb to the end of the road, at a roundabout on the A174. The road ahead continues into the town centre but the original A171 turned right to enter town along Bagdale.
