B9068

The B9068 is one of the three B-roads on the island of Sanday, and is the only one to meet the other two.

Kettletoft

The route starts at Kettletoft Pier on Kettletoft Bay, which was the original ferry pier from the Orkney Mainland. It heads north, along the villages main street - a dozen or so properties - before climbing gently up to How farm. This, rather surprisingly, is the highest point on the whole route, at 18m above sea level. At low tide, the view to the east across Kettletoft Bay gives an idea of how Sanday got its name, with vast expanses of sandy beach spread out below. The route then drops a little, passing the junction with the B9069 which heads east, skipping from one beach to the next until it finally reaches the eastern end of the island. The B9068, meanwhile, continues to head north, passing a little above the Bea Loch, and meeting the B9070 beyond. This route heads south west to the island's new ferry terminal.

A slight kink to the right leads into the scattered village of Broughtown, from where another long straight leads down to the head of Otterswick. A section of the road here was notorious for flooding in the winter during a high tide, as it sits just a metre or two above sea level. The last couple of miles of the route are almost one long straight, passing through the patchwork of rectilinear fields, scattered with houses and farms. A final left hand bend sees the road drop to single track, and it terminates soon after in the farmyard at Scar, from where a track leads down on to the beach.
