The B1522 follows part of the pre-bypass route of the A19 into Sunderland from the south.
The road starts at a roundabout on the A1018 where that road moves from the D2 Seaham bypass to the S2 Ryhope bypass. We head north into the latter and zigzag through the village centre, meeting the B1286 and B1287 at either end. We then cross a field, with the sea on the right on the far side of the A1018, and quickly enter Grangetown, where we meet the B1405 at a signalised crossroads.
We continue north along the residential Ryhope Road past the cemetery and then meet the original B1405 and a dual-carriageway unclassified road at a roundabout in the centre of the suburb. We bear right to continue north and become D2 soon afterwards. The road remains dual for the rest of its route and becomes less built-up at the far end as we pass a park and school grounds. The road ends at a gyratory on the A1231 on the southern edge of Sunderland city centre.
History
The original route of the B1522 began on Ryhope Road (the former A1018, and before that the A19), heading east along Ocean Road then turning north to follow Commercial Road and Hendon Road to end on Lawrence Street, which at that time was the B1294.
When the Southern Radial Route was opened in 2008, the A1018 was moved onto a more easterly alignment to meet the northern end of the new road. In the process, it took over some of the B1294 and the entire B1522 with the exception of Ocean Road. The displaced B-roads were in turn moved onto the A1018's former alignment. Although OS mapping labels Ocean Road between Ryhope Road and Commercial Road as B1405, Google and OpenStreetMap label it as a spur of the B1522. Signage on the ground appears to confirm the latter, however given that green signs remain in the area showing the A1018 number from before the opening of the new route, this signage may not necessarily be correct.
