The B1286 is a largely urban B-road on the edge of the city of Sunderland.
Route
The road starts on the A182 to the west of New Herrington. It heads east through the village before crossing a bridge over the A19 and reaching the A690 at the Board Inn in East Herrington.
From there the route is ambiguous, with signage on the ground disagreeing with OS mapping. The signs suggest that the B1286 continues along its original route through East Herrington before turning south at a roundabout to meet the dual carriageway Doxford Park Way. However, OS mapping suggests that the B1286 multiplexes south along the A690 to Herrington Interchange on the A19 before turning east along City Way past Doxford International business park to reach Doxford Park Way.
Before Doxford Park Way was built the road ran along Silksworth Road through Silksworth village but now it follows Doxford Park Way through several roundabouts, then Burdon Road into Tunstall, where it regains its original route. It continues from here along an urban single-carriageway into Ryhope, ending on the B1522 (former A19 and A1018) in the centre of the village.
