The B1539 starts at a large roundabout with the A1290, where it heads south across the Queen Alexandra Bridge over the River Wear. The Stadium of Light, home to Sunderland AFC, is visible to the left on the approach to the bridge. At the southern end of the bridge the road ends at a roundabout on the B1405.
History
The Queen Alexandra Bridge was originally part of the B1290, and was upgraded to become part of the A1231 when that road was completed in the late 1970s. This lasted until the Northern Spire opened in 2018, taking the A1231 away and downgrading the Queen Alexandra Bridge to Class II status once again.
