Route outline (key) | ||||
|
The B1289 was a B-road between Washington and Sunderland. It runs parallel to the later A1231, so the building of the new road has made the old redundant.
Route
It started on the B1288 to the south of Springwell, at the point where at present the mainline TOTSOs off the spur to the A194(M). This first section of ex-B1289 headed due east and is lost under the A194(M) but the route soon reappears and becomes what is now the A1290.
The route of the B1289 through Washington is now difficult to follow, although it followed Victoria Road and multiplexed along the A182 for a short distance in the centre of the town. The A1290 continues to follow the ex-B1289 almost as far as the North East Aircraft Museum before it turns off. The B1289 continued straight on along Washington Road and through Hylton Castle and Southwick.
On the western edge of Sunderland the B1289 met the B1290 and B1291 in quick succession before continuing along Southwick Road. It ended on the A19 (now A1018) in Monkwearmouth.
History
Southwick Relief Road opened in 1986 and Southwick Road Bypass opened in 1998 (see A1290 page for detail).
