Route
The B9135 is a short, but useful, back door into Lossiemouth which also provides access to the eastern end of the RAF Lossiemouth Airbase. It starts a mile or so south of Lossie on the A941 and heads slightly west of north, with a long straight before a kink to the right as it reaches the perimeter of the RAF base. There is then a small roundabout at the entrance to the airbase, followed by another short straight up to the end of the route on the B9040. This last section of the B9135, along Muirton Road, has always been part of the route; however, as we shall see, it was once a quite different road.
History
The B9135 is an odd road, in that its original route, as classified around 1930, was as an east-west link between Lossiemouth and the B9012 south of Duffus. However, with the construction of RAF Lossiemouth, it was initially broken in two (as seen adjacent), the Lossie end stopping at the former junction near Kinneddar and the Duffus end at the junction on Drainie Road near Westerfolds. With time a new road was constructed along the north side of the airfield, mainly using existing lanes and tracks; this was given the B9040 number.
Presumably to promote this new route, it later acquired a section of the B9012 into Burghead at its western end and the eastern section of the B9135 through Lossie. However, before this happened, the former disconnected western section of the B9135 was declassified, with the eastern section extended southwards to meet the A941.
The original route of the B9135 into Lossiemouth town centre continued from Muirton Road along Stotfield Road and then Queen Street to meet the end of the A941 at the Harbour. This section is now the eastern end of the B9040.
