B9164 (Inverness)

Shore Street, Inverness, the would-be B9164

The current B9164 is described as being a rather odd little road, but this version of the B9164 seems to be even odder.

The only evidence we have for its existence is the 1986 OS Landranger map and a sign on Harbour Road, located on the approach to the A82 roundabout when heading west, which states that the road directly ahead, the western end of Harbour Road, is the B9164. The road would have headed west along Harbour Road before turning south along Shore Street to end on the B9161 Chapel Street. However, it has now been identified that the sign is incorrect, and should read B9146, the number which is labelled on OS 1:10,000 sheets from c1980. In any case, B9146 and the nearby Inverness end of B9161 were declassified around 1990.

At one time the B9164 number was also shown on a sign pointing off the roundabout itself, but that sign has either been replaced or more likely, patched with "Police" covering up the number when the new police station was opened.

Nearby, on the A82, a sign pointing to the railway depot still exists with the British Rail double arrow inverted.
