History
The at-grade roundabout became a diamond junction when a bridge was built in the 1980s. In 2009 work started on upgrading the A1 to a motorway and the junction was changed to a dumbbell. The A1(M) to the south opened on the 6th of October 2011 with the section to the north opening in 2012. The old bridge remains and the motorway hard shoulders are interrupted beneath it. New roundabouts have been built and the original slip roads have been replaced by new ones further from the A1 centre line.
Interestingly the A61 between the dumbbell roundabouts was trunked following construction in 2013.

- The A61 Trunk Road (A1(M) Junction 50, Baldersby Interchange) (Trunking) Order 2013 - Two new roundabouts have been constructed on the A61 on either side of the A1(M) Motorway at Junction 50 (Baldersby Interchange), which together form a ‘dumbbell roundabout’ arrangement at this grade separated junction over the A1(M). In order to take responsibility for managing and maintaining the entire Baldersby Interchange, the Secretary of State will become the highway authority for the highways described in the Schedule to this Order.
