Barton Interchange is junction 56 of the A1(M).
This junction was originally constructed as the most southerly extent of the scheme between this location and Newcastle. For many years, south of here the A1 was all-purpose. In 2018, the section immediately to the south became motorway as well.
As part of this upgrade, the A6055 was extended north from Scotch Corner to meet the existing Kneeton Lane, and then TOTSOing onto Silver Street, to meet up with the A1(M) at Barton Interchange, forming a Local Access Road between the junctions.
