Abbotsview Junction is at the east end of the A1 Haddington bypass. It is where the Special Road legislation splits, with the older ('90s) Special Road to the west, and the newer ('00s) to the east. The junction is a dumbbell interchange where the A199 passes under the A1. However, unlike most similar junctions where the two routes cross at right angles, here the A199 is the old line of the A1, and so they are running parallel. The A199 therefore approaches the southern roundabout from the west and departs from the northern one to the east, albeit with more a curve to avoid the sliproad. The A60933 also terminates at the southern roundabout, having followed part of the original A1 line through the town centre, while an unclassified route heads north.
The junction was a temporary terminus of the improved road, with the overbridge constructed as part of Haddington bypass scheme, which opened in 1996. This was only brought into use when the A1 dualling was completed east of this location in 2004. For several years, eastbound traffic using the Haddington bypass therefore had to negotiate both the roundabouts, as the old A1 connected into the southern side of the dumbbell.
The junction before eastward dualling of the A1 with the overbridge remaining unused
