The A920 is listed in the 1922 Road Lists as being a short route in Perth, connecting the A90 to the south of the town centre with the A85/A921 junction at the Victoria Bridge (the predecessor of Queens Bridge).
The route was renumbered in May 1936 as part of the A94. The OS Six Inch maps from 1947 for Perth shows the A94 number on South Tay Street, following a short multiplex with the A85. The road remained part of the A94 through the 1970s until the A9 western bypass was opened and so today the road forms part of the A989 ring road.
The 1922 MOT Road List defines this route as: Perth (East Marshall Place and South Tay Street from Edinburgh Road to Victoria Bridge)
