Perthshire is one of the larger Scottish traditional counties, situated in the central belt of Scotland astride the River Tay. From 1929 to 1975 the County of Kinross was combined with Perthshire to form the Perth and Kinross County Council, and this situation survives to this day, after 20 years as a district within Tayside Regional Council, Perth and Kinross Council became a unitary authority in 1996. The boundaries have been somewhat different, however, since 1975 when a large chunk of southern Perthshire was transferred to the Central Regional Council, and is now part of Stirling Council area.
Geography & Economy
Spanning from the fertile Carse of Gowrie along the banks of the Spey to the mountains of the Cairngorms, the landscape of Perthshire is a varied one. The north of the county is often referred to as Highland Perthshire, because of the stark difference from the rest of the county, and much of this area was belatedly added to the Cairngorm National Park area. The Tay and its tributaries extend the farming land available far inland, and also provide rich fishing areas in the lochs such as Loch Earn and Loch Tay.
Fishing isn't the only use of the land, however, aside from the farming in the Carse of Gowrie and around the lower reaches of the Tay, there are vast tracts of forestry in the county, and many of the upland areas are given over to Grouse Moors or Stalking in season. Tourists also flock to the county, whether to climb the mountains, explore the deserted glens, or settle in the more genteel resorts of Pitlochry and Crieff, amongst others.
Roads
The main road through the county is the A9, which runs west-east along the southern edge from Dunblane to Perth and then turns northwards to the mountains, climbing up to the county boundary at Drumochter Pass. To the north and west of the A9, there are a series of roads threading their way through the lush glens,a long lochsides and over hill passes to reach the north west of the county around Crianlarich and Tyndrum. Many of the more important routes originated as Military roads built by General Wade and his successor Major Caulfeild nearly 300 years ago.
The Tay is spanned by some fine bridges, including Wades Bridge at Aberfeldy. Most non-trunk roads within the traditional county are maintained by Perth and Kinross or Stirling Councils. The trunk roads are managed by Transport Scotland and include the A82, A84, A85, A90 and Motorways. The A9 is currently undergoing a program of upgrading to Dual Carriageway, which should see the whole route through the county being dualled by 2025.
